About Me

Hi, I'm Tom!
I'm an all-round Game Designer from the North East of the UK. As my passion I have been developing my first indie title with a team of close friends from University since late 2020 at Dog Box Games. Recently, I concluded my time as a Game Designer & Scout at indie publisher Firestoke.
I'm a massive RPG gamer, my favourite being Divinity: Original Sin 2. I love a wide variety of titles in the genre and beyond, especially thanks to working as a scout at Firestoke, because this experience broadened my horizons and pushed me to expand my library to get and enjoy many different experiences in games and understand what makes each successful.

WORK IN PROGRESS: "Finding Bentley: Mansion Madness"
Finding Bentley: Mansion Madness is a 3rd person puzzle adventure game set inside of a spooky mansion. Pink finds herself exploring this old haunted mansion trying to find her overly curious little pup Bentley who ran inside and went missing.
On the project I develop most of the core systems, along with our Company Director Rob Brough, using Blueprint visual scripting in Unreal Engine. Just a few examples of these are: Save System; Objectives; Minigame functionality; Respawn Functions and Menu functionality.
Along with 3 other members of the team we built a demo for EGX in 2022 and showcased it there, which was my first major games event as a developer. We took down a great amount feedback from many awesome players.
Currently, we're working towards completing an updated demo and showreel for the company.

ANDROID HUNTER
Teesside University - Final Year Project
Android Hunter is a game with two levels the first being a 3rd person stealth challenge and second a turn-based shooter. Both are set within the same environment. This was mainly a passion project in which I focused on the level design and mechanics, creating a space suitable for two different forms of gameplay.
All of the programming work was done by myself using Blueprint Visual Scripting. The goal of the project was to understand and demonstrate how to efficiently reuse a game level to provide a variety of experience to the player. This forced my to make the most of what I had available in a defined space and push myself to develop these two disparate game modes.
It was a great challenge to take on for my final year project and I was very happy with it overall and how much it pushed me to learn and improve my scripting abilities and design knowledge.

AS I REMEMBER
Teesside University - Beta Arcade
As I Remember is a 3D 3rd person puzzler. The player must solve these puzzles to collect pieces of a photograph. It is set within a nightmare and the character has forgotten someone they have lost and the photograph will help them remember and escape the nightmare. On this project I worked as a gameplay designer and as there were no programmers, we scripted the projected entirely with Blueprint Visual Scripting. Working closely with each of the level designers I created any complex level-spanning mechanics they needed. I managed the project using Git source control and it was my responsibility to design and manage the flow of the game, essentially piecing it all together. Alongside this, I designed and developed the player's water gun mechanic, physical interactions and implemented all animation & audio.
